International high 5: The IIS E.Majorana
The IIS (Istituto di Istruzione Superiore) 'Ettore Majorana' , is one of the most important technical school in the province of L'Aquila, central Italy.
Our town, Avezzano, is a relatively modern town having been completely rebuilt after a devastating earthquake in 1915.
53 km (kilometers/kilometres) from L'Aquila, about 100 km from Rome, Avezzano is an important commercial, industrial and agricultural centre . But also technology has its place, with Telespazio, one of the leaders in satellite communications, and the huge LFoundry Technology plant.
It also has got an important historical background and an interesting cultural heritage of Roman origin.
The Fucino basin, where Avezzano lays, is formed by a wide plain at about 600 metres a.s.l. (above sea level). It is situated at the center of the Marsica , which has the characteristics of a mountain environment.
This land was reclaimed after the artificial drainage of Lake Fucino. It had already been subjected to a reclamation project in the I (first) century AD at the initiative of the Roman Emperor Claudius. However, the drainage of the lake was successfully completed only around the middle of the XIX ( nineteenth) century.
After the reclamation, intensive agriculture developed with advanced technologies and great productivity.
Our school is situated in the suburban part of the town and a lot of students commute from the near villages. It is a multi-institutions school with different vocational courses (Chemistry, Mechanics, Information Technology, Electronics, Electrothecnics), a Liceo, specializing in scientific studies, and a Professional course.
It was born in 1966 as a branch of the ITIS (Istituto Tecnico Industriale) in L'Aquila with just one specialization, Electrotechnics. In a few years the number of students increased considerably so other courses were activated.
On 1 October 1972 it became autonomous as Istituto Tecnico Industriale 'Ettore Majorana'. Following the latest school reform, it was renamed as IIS (Istituto di Istruzione Superiore).
The school is quite a big one with about 1000 students, mainly boys, aged 14-19 and about 120 teachers. It is located in a modern building equipped with different types of laboratories, three gyms, an up-to-date library and Internet connection in each classroom.
Our school offers various interesting extracurricular activities such as a theatrical performance at the end of each school year. We have also musical and sport groups, a school magazine , creative workshops, and specific projects for different courses .
Every year in March there is " The Scientific and Technological Week" during which groups of students, supported by their teachers, show their works to visitors, with a great visibility in local area.
